The animal totem and studio namesake. The squid as a symbol first showed up in my life in the summer of 2019, an unhappy period marked by grief and heartbreak. I happened to photograph an orange squid kite that was flying overhead at West Wittering beach and I loved the dichotomy of a sea creature perusing the sky instead of the deep dark ocean of its natural habitat.
And the symbol of the squid has a knack for resurfacing whenever life is feeling particularly challenging- a reminder to tap into my own resourcefulness and push through fears.
In mythology the squid represents hidden knowledge and transformation. Their ability to vanish into a cloud of ink to avoid predators makes them mysterious yet adaptable creatures. I took this as a sign to push forward in a new direction, returning to paper collage as a way to reboot my artist practice.
My journey as an artist feels very much like the squid in the sky: out of its comfort zone but free to explore new territory.
