Yellow Flower

Our earliest artistic endeavours as children often revolve around drawing simple shapes or pictures like trees, the sea or the sun. And in this piece I wanted to return to this basic instinct.  Yellow, a primal primary colour embodies the essence of the sun; joyful and radiant. And the simple flower is often the first thing we ever draw. It is this simplicity in colour and form that lends itself so well to collage. And after a long break from art, this image marked a return to my creative practice using scissors and paper as my favoured materials.

To borrow the phase made famous by Matisse I found myself “drawing with scissors” and almost immediately found my flow. I find it such a liberating process. You can’t be as precise as you would be with a pencil or pen and therefore you are suggesting shape and form rather than producing very refined representations of the subject matter.

Using methods and approaches that you would have used in primary school such as the humble glue stick and bits of paper to make images, as an adult feels very accessible and liberating! And whilst I do celebrate the advances in digital art and using applications myself, these particular works celebrate the analogue aesthetic in all its clunky imperfection.
