Russian Dolls

I have been gifted two sets of Russian dolls in my time and both times from my Dad. Once as a young girl and once as an adult!  He was always returning home from work trips abroad with a doll dressed in traditional costumes and I found my first set of Matryoshka dolls endlessly adorable, taking pride of place amongst my toy collection. Now I see them as symbols of maternal linage and protection and here I have given them a kitsch kiss of the brightest colours in the paint box. Their delicate faces have a cartoon like finish, each one baring different coloured eyes and their own unique expression. Only the tiniest one is missing their spotty dress.. following the tradition of making the baby doll different from the other dolls.
